An Evening With David Curtis

On May 21st 2008 the Retford Art Society hosted an evening with world renowned artist David Curtis at Retford Little Theatre. The event was a part of the societies 40th anniversary celebrations and was eagerly anticipated by the members with all tickets being sold within a few days of going on sale. Long standing RAS member Harold Rickells was selected as the subject for David's portrait demonstration due to his youthful charm and ability to sit still for long periods of time. In just two hours David produced a fabulous likeness of Harold whilst delivering a running commentary to accompany every stroke of the brush.

Ready to Start
The audience were transfixed as Harold's face began to gaze out of the canvas, simple flashes of David's brush adding subtle detail with astounding ease. Once the last detail was finally added, Harold was finally allowed to move, and David completed his demonstration to a standing ovation and a speach of thanks from life president Val Moore. David took the portrait back to his studio to add the finishing touches.
The Finished Article
Harold makes himself comfortable ready for the off in front of the empty canvas Harold has hardly moved a muscle as David's portrait comes to life.

David and his Portrait
The society hired a big screen specially for the evening due to the size of the theatre. This allowed everyone an excellent view of the action and proved such a hit that it will definately be used again for future paiting demonstrations as it allows the artist to paint freely without having to worry about obstructing the view of his work.
The Big Screen
Modern Marvel: The big screen proved a hit with both artist and audience

Everyone who attended the evening had a fantastic time (made even more fantastic by the bar srvice at the half time interfav) and all agreed that David had been the perfect guest artist to help the Retford Art Society to celebrate its anniversary in style.
